about
meet the jeweller
Lucy Thompson is a Welsh independent jewellery designer-maker. She specialises in creating unique, contemporary jewellery using traditional jewellery making techniques.
Lucy is influenced by her background in sculpture and the Welsh landscape. Inspired by ancient designs, she uses repetition, geometric shapes and gritty textures to create subtle contrasts and a signature style that is timeless.
BACKGROUND
“I originally studied sculpture before making a natural transition to jewellery design and making. I have always enjoyed creatively fabricating with my hands and I found that making jewellery become the perfect outlet for that - making mini wearable pieces of art.
Even from a young age I have been a magpie for any type of jewellery, seeking it out wherever I could find it. I now have a passion for contemporary jewellery and as I have gotten older I’ve moved on from the stacks of mismatched plastic and handmade friendship bracelets and charity shop costume jewellery necklaces of my youth and prefer to wear a more curated collection of contemporary jewellery - some of my own, some I have collected from other jewellers that I love and admire.”
Every piece is designed and handmade by Lucy with care and precision.
The making of a pair of BAR drop earrings.
It all starts with a piece of wire that gets textured, cut, sanded, assembled and soldered before cleaning up and polishing…
hands at work
“Raising a baby during the pandemic of 2020 highlighted what is truly important to me. Leaving my old life behind, selling our home and relocating from a city to the country has created the space to breathe, to be creative and most importantly, to learn how to best approach my new role as a mother.
I'm still emerging into my new life and I’m not entirely sure yet where all my interests lie! But I can certainly tell you what brings me joy…
- My son's delight at being outside, free to roam amongst the trees.
- The changing light and landscape - how the sun shines through the trees or how the light changes in the fog.
- The bird song as I step out of my house towards my workshop tucked away in a caravan, surrounded by green grass and dandelions… and the view!
Most jewellers will probably say that their favourite place to be is at their bench - it seems like a cliche but it's true! I love immersing myself in the creation of a piece of jewellery, the way the silver is transformed through forming, filing and soldering. The weight of a ring in my palm. The satisfying sizzle as I drop something into the pickle pot. Listening to a podcast whilst I work, feeling connected to listeners all over the world.
I look forward to sharing my new work with you!”
a personal note
Meet the team
No workshop of Lucy’s would be complete without some four-legged company…
Buddy and Albie. Both as goofy as one another and both hopeless at making jewellery or cups of tea.
The most sensitive and hairiest dog you’ll ever meet - he can be found either lounging on the sofa, next to Lucy’s feet under the jewellery bench or attempting to climb trees to get to the squirrels or digging holes everywhere!
Buddy
Often to be found lying in this position when not sneaking onto the counters, lying on laptops or knocking jewellery over in photoshoots.
